Following are excerpts of activities reported by the Greene County sheriff’s office:
Monday, Nov. 30: At 6:48 am a deputy initiated a traffic stop at the intersection of 240th St and County Road N-58 (A Ave) in Scranton Township and subsequently arrested Lance Edward Kruse, 33, of Scranton for driving while barred, operating without interlock device, operation without registration card or plate and failure to provide proof of financial liability*. At 8:59 am a deputy was dispatched for a single vehicle rollover accident that occurred on 110th St and V Ave in Paton Township. Christopher Orlando Schulte, 31, of Harcourt was eastbound on 110th St when, due to the ice coated gravel, he lost control of his 1997 Jeep Grand Cherokee, entering the south ditch and rolling. Schulte was not injured but his Jeep was determined to be a total loss. Schulte was issued a citation for failure to reduce speed for the conditions.
At 1:22 pm a deputy was advised of a vehicle that had slid into the ditch on Highway 30 west of Scranton. The car was removed by the owner. No damage to the vehicle or injuries were reported. At 1:36 pm a deputy was dispatched to the Casey’s General Store in Grand Junction for a reported gas drive off. No vehicle description was determined at that time. At 1:52 pm the chief deputy sheriff investigated the theft of property by nonpayment from a Greene County business.
Sunday, Nov. 29: At 12:03 am a deputy was dispatched for a reported domestic verbal altercation in the 1000 block of 200th St in Bristol Township. Upon the deputy’s arrival, he witnessed the driver of a vehicle drive into the farm property and exit the car. The driver then approached a female standing in the yard. After an investigation, the deputy arrested Dustin Eugene Leggitt, 38, of rural Jefferson for operating while intoxicated – first offense (serious misdemeanor)*. The deputy was assisted by an Iowa State Patrol officer at the scene.

Friday, Nov. 27: At 9:26 am a deputy was dispatched to investigate a burglary and theft of property from a residence in Greene County.
Thursday, Nov. 26: At 5:39 pm a deputy checked a reported vehicle in the ditch on 110th St and County Road N-65 (D Ave). The driver advised that he was not injured and his vehicle sustained no damage. The vehicle was removed by the owner. At 6:04 pm, fire departments from Scranton, Jefferson, Ralston and two deputies all responded to a house fire in the 1100 block of Lincoln St in Scranton. The fire was contained to the second story with damage estimates not determined at this time.
Wednesday, Nov. 25: At 12:28 pm, a deputy was advised of the illegal dumping of trash materials in the 600 block of H Ave in Highland Township. No visible signs of ownership were found on the trash.
Tuesday, Nov. 24: At 9:14 am a deputy initiated an investigation after he was advised by a Scranton resident of fraudulent charges being debited to several of her credit cards accounts. At 1:45 pm the chief deputy sheriff spoke with a Grand Junction resident about her concern of finding drug paraphernalia in the 800 block of Percival St. At 3:46 pm the chief deputy investigated a burglary and theft of prescription drugs from a rural residence. At 6:01 pm a deputy was advised by a Dana resident of receiving a phone scam that involved the possible breach of his bank account. At 8:19 pm a deputy assisted JPD officers with the arrest of Michael Lynn Heard, 54, of Jefferson, on an outstanding warrant from Boone County.

Sunday, Nov. 22: At 12:18 am, a deputy, while on another call, was assisted by a JPD officer with the report of cattle along the roadway on Highway 30 and Kirkwood Ave west of Jefferson. The officer and the cattle owner put the 12 to 14 head back into the pen. At 12:21 am a deputy was advised by the Union Pacific railroad dispatchers that several vehicles were parked on or near the railroad tracks at the Highway 144 crossing in Grand Junction. After an investigation and removal of the two vehicles it was determined that Brett Everett Grundon had driven the first vehicle into the ditch near the railroad tracks and had called for a second vehicle to pull his from the ditch. The second vehicle that Grundon had summoned and driven became stuck on the tracks as well. The tracks were cleared so train traffic could resume. Brett Everett Grundon, 34, of Grand Junction was taken into custody after field sobriety testing and was subsequently arrested and charged with operation of a motor vehicle while intoxicated- first offense*. Grand Junction rescue, Greene County EMS and an Iowa State Patrol officer were also dispatched to the scene when it was first reported to be a two vehicle accident. At 2:54 pm a deputy issued a DNR salvage deer tag for human consumption to a Greene County resident for a deer that was struck on Highway 144 near 110th St in Paton Township.
Saturday, Nov. 21: At 1:42 am a deputy assisted a JPD officer with securing a vehicle after the officer arrested a male driver for driving while revoked. At 11:29 am, a deputy was dispatched to the 2400 block of 337th St in Washington Township to investigate the attempted theft of gas from a vehicle and fuel barrel. At 3:36 pm a deputy spoke with the riders of the ATV 4-wheeler that were operating on less than one acre of privately owned property in Scranton.

Thursday, Nov. 19: At 7:31 am the sheriff investigated a minor two vehicle accident that occurred on Highway 4 at the intersection with 310th St in Franklin Township. Amy Ann Purdie, 36, of Jefferson was southbound on Highway 4 and slowing for a vehicle that was turning right onto 310th Street, when Daric Christopher Whipple, 18, of Jefferson, also southbound, failed to slow for the Purdie vehicle and struck the rear of it. Purdie and her three children were not injured, but her 2014 Honda Odyssey sustained an estimated $3,000 in damages. Whipple was not injured but his 2003 Toyota 4Runner sustained an estimated $2,000 in damages. Charges against Whipple are pending further investigation. At 10:53 am a deputy was dispatched to the 2400 block of V Ave in Washington Township to investigate a burglary and criminal mischief to a farm building site.
At 11:21 am a deputy was dispatched to the 2400 block of 337th St in Washington Township to investigate the theft of fuel and criminal mischief to a gas line on the vehicle. At 2:44 pm a deputy was dispatched for the report of illegal dumping along the roadway in the 1400 block of 252nd St in Grant Township. The driver’s identity was determined and will be spoken to by the deputy. At 6:44 pm a deputy was dispatched to a car-deer accident that occurred at the intersection of 195th St and Orchard Ave in Hardin Township. Gerardo John Lindgren, 23, of rural Jefferson was westbound on 195th St when a deer ran onto the roadway and was struck. Damage to Lindgren’s 2011 Ford F-250 was estimated to be $700. At 9:04 pm two deputies, Grand Junction rescue and Greene County EMS all assisted the Iowa State Patrol with a single vehicle rollover accident that occurred in the 800 block of 11th St in Grand Junction. Mickaylyn Marie Sanders, 16, of Grand Junction lost control of her 2004 Ford Explorer and it rolled several times as she tried to turn onto 2nd St from 11th St. One passenger in the vehicle was taken to the Greene County Medical Center for further evaluation.
Wednesday, Nov. 18: At 9:34 am a deputy was dispatched to the 100 block of 150th St in Cedar Township to investigate a reported burglary and theft of shop equipment and tools. At 11:33 am a deputy was advised by a Churdan resident that their personal information had been compromised and used to set up a fraudulent credit card account with charges already debited to the account. The deputy is investigating the Florida address that initiated the identity theft. At 4:39 pm a deputy was dispatched to the 500 block of W Hager St in Grand Junction to investigate a harassment concern involving text messages.
Tuesday, Nov. 17: At 5:07 pm a deputy was dispatched to investigate a minor backing accident that occurred at the Casey’s General Store parking lot in Grand Junction.
Monday, Nov. 16: At 11:20 am several deputies and a JPD officer assisted the Carroll County sheriff’s office with locating a male subject in Jefferson who was transported back to Carroll County for an evaluation. At 12:36 pm a deputy assisted a DNR conservation officer with an investigation involving the theft of animal traps from the 1800 block of 315th St in Franklin Township. At 3:30 pm, a deputy investigated a burglary and theft of personal items from a rural residence in Greene County. At 4:10 pm a deputy was dispatched to the 200 block of 18th St in Grand Junction to investigate construction materials being taken from a building under renovation, without the owner’s consent.

Friday, Nov. 13: At 9:32 am a deputy was dispatched to the 1700 block of T Ave in Junction Ave to investigate criminal mischief to the siding of a machine shed and a grain auger.
Thursday, Nov. 12: At 7:43 am a deputy was dispatched to a two vehicle accident at the intersection of 14th and Bennett St in Grand Junction. Coleen Kay Sillyman, 51, of Grand Junction, had stopped at the stop sign on Bennett St East and then proceeded into the intersection and was struck by a northbound Chevrolet pickup truck being driven by Hayden Matthew Hoffman, 17, of Grand Junction. Sillyman was not injured but her 2013 Ford SUV sustained an estimated $5,500 in damages. Hoffman’s 2006 Chevrolet pickup sustained an estimated $2,500 in damages. At 8:09 am a deputy was dispatched to investigate the report of the illegal dumping of trash near the Squirrel Hollow boat ramp. The deputy will contact several individuals in regards to their names being found in the trash. At 10 am the chief deputy sheriff and the state fire marshal investigated the origin of a home fire that occurred in the 300 block of E. Garfield St in Jefferson a few days earlier. At 11:25 am a deputy was dispatched to the 800 block of Percival St in Grand Junction for a harassment concern. At 1:15 pm the Greene County sheriff’s office, Grand Junction rescue and Greene County EMS assisted the Iowa State Patrol with a single vehicle rollover accident that occurred on Highway 144 just north of Highway 30 near Grand Junction. Vicki Rose Hansen, 59, of Gowrie was southbound on Highway 144 when she failed to maneuver the curves and rolled her 1989 Ford F150 pickup truck into the east ditch. She was transported by Grand Junction rescue to the Greene County Medical Center emergency room for further evaluation.
Wednesday, Nov. 11: At 2:09 pm a deputy assisted a JPD officer with a two vehicle accident at the intersection of Olive St and Lincoln Way. At 4:05 pm a deputy was advised of a tree that had fallen on the bridge crossing the Raccoon River on 283rd St in Grant Township. Secondary roads personnel were advised of the tree. At 9:14 pm a deputy was advised of a leaning power pole south of Highway 30 on Highway 144 in Grand Junction. The Grand Junction Municipal Light and Power was advised of the pole location.
Tuesday, Nov. 10: At 5:15 pm, a deputy was advised of a trespassing concern in Churdan. At 6:12 pm a deputy was dispatched for a car-deer accident in the 900 block of County Road N-65 (D Ave) in Kendrick Township. Jeffery Allen Jorgensen, 54, of Ames was northbound when a deer ran onto the roadway and was struck. Jorgensen was not injured but his 2015 Chevrolet Silverado K250 pickup truck sustained an estimated $4,500 in damages. At 7:36 pm a deputy was dispatched to investigate the report of a pickup truck hitting a cow along the roadway on County Road E-53 (240th St) near F Ave. Harvey Raymond Swartz, 69, of Jefferson was westbound on E-53 when the lights of an oncoming car caused him not to see a cow standing close to the traveled portion of the roadway. Swartz stuck the cow with his 1998 Dodge pickup, causing an estimated $6,500 in damages. Swartz was not injured in the accident.
Monday, Nov. 9: No activity reported.
Sunday, Nov. 8: At 4:45 pm a deputy was dispatched to a single vehicle rollover accident at the intersection 110th Street and O Ave in Paton Township. The male driver had left the scene to be checked out at the St Anthony’s Reginal Hospital in Carroll for only minor injuries. Jacob Taylor Sunde, 17, of rural Scranton stated that he was westbound on 110th St when a deer ran onto the roadway and he swerved to avoid the collision, causing him to slide into the ditch. Extensive damage was reported to his vehicle. At 8:20 pm a deputy was advised of a small grass fire that was extinguished by a passerby on H Ave between 180th and County Road E-33 (190th St) in Bristol Township. The deputy checked the location to see that the fire had not rekindled.
Saturday, Nov. 7: At 12:04 pm a deputy investigated an assault that occurred on the basketball court in Grand Junction involving four juveniles. Assault charges involving one of the juvenile males are pending upon further investigation.at 8:07 pm a deputy issued a citation to an employee of the Sparky’s One Stop in Jefferson after the clerk sold tobacco to an underage male in a tobacco compliance check of all businesses selling tobacco in Greene County. At 9:53 pm a deputy was advised of a vehicle that had entered the ditch on 230th St and was removed by the owner. The driver was advised that since the vehicle had been removed it was his responsibility to file the state accident report and inform his insurance company.
Friday, Nov. 6: At 8:25 am the chief deputy sheriff, sheriff and an Iowa State Patrol officer all responded for the report of two suspicious persons trespassing and entering buildings at a farm residence in the 1800 block of 218th St in Hardin Township. The two people, a male and a female, were questioned and the male was subsequently arrested. Tyler Cordell Kirby, 34, of Des Moines was booked in to the Greene County jail on charges of possession of a controlled substance – third or subsequent offense, possession of drug paraphernalia and theft – fifth degree*. At 9:35 am a deputy was dispatched to issue a Department of Natural Resources salvage deer tag to a male subject for a deer that had been struck on Highway 144 southeast of Rippey. At 1:15 pm a deputy was dispatched to a residence in the 800 block of Percival St in Grand Junction for the report of a violation of a no contact order. Coleman Keith Marlow Jr, 34, of that address, was arrested by the deputy for the no contact violation and trespassing*. At 5:54 pm a deputy was advised of a dog running at large in the 1000 block of H Ave in Bristol Township. The dog was eventually captured and transported to the shelter in Jefferson. At 6:05 pm a deputy was dispatched to the Sparky’s One Stop in Churdan to investigate the possible theft of a billfold from a vehicle that was parked at the business. The deputy will be checking the store video for more evidence. At 8:13 pm a deputy was dispatched to the 1500 block of H Ave in Bristol Township for a car-deer accident. Rebecca Ann Rumley, 58, of rural Scranton struck a deer that ran onto the roadway. Rumley was not injured but the pickup she was driving sustained an estimated $2,000 in damages. She also requested a DNR salvage tag for the deer.
Information has been released about an accident reported to have occurred Nov. 3 at 2:47 pm on Highway 30 at County Road P-46 east of Grand Junction. According to a deputy’s report, Maureen Whelan Townsend, 45, of Urbandale was southbound on P-46. A witness told the deputy Townsend ran the stop sign without slowing for the intersection. Her 2015 Subaru Forrester was struck by an eastbound 1995 Ford Ranger pickup truck driven by Mark Harrison Foreman, 47, of Bayard. Townsend’s vehicle went airborne; both vehicles came to rest in the east ditch. Both drivers suffered non-incapacitating injuries and were transported to Greene County Medical Center. Townsend was transported by Greene County Emergency Medical Services, and Foreman by Grand Junction rescue. Both drivers were wearing seatbelts at the time of the accident. Townsend was cited for failure to stop as posted. Damage to her vehicle was estimated at $25,000. Damage to Foreman’s vehicle was estimated at $4,500.
Thursday, Nov. 5: At 9:35 am a deputy was advised of a burglary and theft of prescription medications from a residence in the 1400 block of 160th St in Dawson Township. At 1:53 pm the sheriff was advised of the possible illegal us of a debit card by a juvenile in Grand Junction. At 6:15 pm a deputy was dispatched to a car-deer accident that occurred on Highway 4 just south of 160th St in Hardin Township. Brant Matthew Schmit, 32, of Jefferson was southbound on Highway 4 when a deer ran onto the roadway and was struck by Schmit’s vehicle. Schmit was not injured but damage to his 2003 GMC Yukon was estimated to be $5,500.
Wednesday, Nov. 4: At 4:08 pm a deputy was dispatched to the 900 block of Q Ave in Hardin Township for a car that went into the ditch to avoid hitting a semi-tractor and grain trailer. Timothy Lowell Wilson, 55, of Fort Dodge, was southbound on Q Ave driving a 1994 Oldsmobile Cutlass when he came up on the semi-tractor with a grain trailer parked along the roadway. Wilson was unable to stop and drove his car into the ditch to avoid striking the grain trailer. The grain trailer is owned by David Lee Ausberger of Jefferson. No damage was reported to either vehicle and no injuries were reported. Wilson was cited for failure to maintain control.
Tuesday, Nov. 3: At 1:20 pm, a deputy was dispatched to the 200 block of County Road E-19 (130th St) in Cedar Township to investigate criminal mischief to a mail box. At 2:47 pm three members of the Greene County sheriff’s office, Grand Junction rescue and Greene County Emergency Medical Services all responded to a two vehicle accident that occurred at the intersection of Highway 30 and County Road P-46 (W Ave) east of Grand Junction. At 6:24 pm a deputy checked the identity of a hitchhiker on Highway 30 east of Jefferson and subsequently arrested Rory Van Huth, 47, of Grand Junction on an outstanding warrant. At 6:35 pm a deputy was dispatched to a car-deer accident in the 1000 block of County Road E-53 (240th St) west of Jefferson. Jason Robert Sherlock, 44, of Jefferson was eastbound when a deer ran onto the roadway and was struck by Sherlock’s van. Sherlock was not injured but his van sustained an estimated $1,000 in damage. At 6:54 pm a deputy was dispatched to the 900 block of Jay St in Churdan to investigate criminal mischief to a vehicle.
Monday, Nov. 2: At 9:52 am a deputy was advised that a vehicle had illegally passed a stopped Paton-Churdan school bus at a rural residence in the 900 block of Highway 4 near Churdan. A description of the car was given and the sheriff’s office is trying to locate the vehicle at this time. At 11:11 am a deputy was dispatched to a reported fight between two sibling females in the 2000 block of County Road E-53 (230th St) west of Grand Junction. After an investigation, the deputy arrested Kera Emily Tesdahl, 27, of Boone for assault and possession of drug paraphernalia (simple misdemeanors) and possession of a controlled substance – first offense (serious misdemeanor)*. At 5:54 pm two deputies were dispatched to the 800 block of Percival St in Grand Junction for a reported domestic assault. After an investigation, Coleman Keith Marlow Jr, 34, of Grand Junction was arrested for domestic abuse assault (simple misdemeanor)*. At 8:16 pm two deputies were dispatched to the 600 block of Hager St in Grand Junction to locate a reported intoxicated male subject who was yelling profanities and being belligerent to others trying to help him. Deputies were advised that the male had been given a ride to Rippey. Deputies located the male subject at the Sparky’s One Stop in Rippey and subsequently arrested R.D. Nicolaisen, 24, of Perry. Nicolaisen was charged with public intoxication and disorderly conduct (simple misdemeanors)*.
Sunday, Nov. 1: At 1:32 am, a deputy spoke with a Grand Junction resident about a possible assault that occurred in the 800 block of Percival St. At 1:52 am, a deputy was asked to check the welfare of unknown persons at residence in the 300 block of E Main St in Grand Junction after an abandoned E-911 call was initiated from that location. At 3:55 am a deputy was asked to assist with a traffic accident in Webster County. The deputy was soon advised that he could disregard as other EMS and Webster County units were on scene. At 5:48 am a deputy was asked to assist a Boone County deputy with a possible intoxicated driver south of Rippey in Boone County. At 2:57 pm a deputy was advised that a reported accident was on the Carroll County side of County Road N-58 (A Ave/ Apple Ave). The Carroll County sheriff’s office investigated the accident. At 3:52 pm, a deputy was dispatched to the 1700 block of County Road E-26 (170th St) in Hardin Township for a vehicle that had struck a cow. The vehicle had left the scene, but the owner of the cow was on scene and advised the deputy the cow belonged to him.
*In all cases when a defendant has been charged, this is merely an accusation, and all defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty.
